THE WAVES

Jala Villas Mentawai is located in one of the most wave-rich regions in the world. The unique thing about our area is all the waves are accessible without needing a boat which means surfing when you want where you want! You can paddle out to Lance's Right (HT's) from directly in front of your room and The Point, Shipwrecks and Mini HTs are a short walk away. There are another 6 breaks within a short scooter ride away including Lance's Left and Bintangs. Surfers of all skill levels can enjoy a broad selection of waves, from heaving barrels to playful beach breaks. Because we are located on a peninsular, onshore on one side of the island means offshore on the other! From May to October, we receive the biggest swells of the year, while November to February sees consistently smaller fun swells, less crowds and easier surfing. During March and April, swells start to show but are smaller and less crowded. Join us for an unforgettable surfing experience!

Lance's Right (HT's)

Lance's Right (aka HT's or Hollow Trees) is the pin up wave of the Mentawai Islands. Located directly in front of Jala Villas you can literally put your leg rope on in your bed, stumble out of your room and paddle out. One of the best right hand reef breaks in the world she has many faces from heaving freight train down the line barrels when its big, to fun, playful walls and easy tubes when its smaller. The outside section is called The Office and breaks only when the swell has a bit of west in it, the inside section is called The Cage or The Surgeons Table and breaks more consistently than The Office. When it's pumping it will break right through. Best surfed on a mid to high tide but still surfable on a low tide for the adventurous.

The Point

The Point is located just a quick stroll up the beach from Jala Villas, you can glimpse it through the trees. A more mellow longer version of Lance's Right, almost point break like. Prefers a south swell and a medium to high tide. Provides the intermediate surfer with a less challenging option if Lance's Right seems too much. Long fun walls good for working on your turns whilst still providing the odd barrel section.

Lance's Left

Lance's Left, a goofy footers dream, first surfed by Lance Knight in 1991 is a world class left-hander.

Long rides with beautifully shaped walls and barrel sections beckon both seasoned riders and adventurous novices alike. Surfable on all tides however mid to high tide is a safer option due to the shallow reef.

Lance's Left thrives under a south-southwest to southwest swell, which generates the ideal angle for the wave to peel along the reef, creating long, playful walls and hollow sections.

While Lance's Left can be surfed year-round, the best months to experience its full potential typically fall within the dry season, from May to September. During these months, the Mentawai Islands bask in sunny skies and offshore winds, creating the perfect canvas for epic sessions at Lance's Left. Lance's Left is approximatley a 20 minute scooter ride away from Jala Villas.

Bintangs

Bintangs is a must-visit spot for surfers of all levels. The short right-hander is known for its slabby barrel, which is super fun and bends back on itself. On smaller days, it's also suitable for less experienced surfers as the reef is a bit deeper at Bintangs. Less than 15 minute scooter ride from Jala Villas.

The Beachie

The Beachie is just over the hill from Jala Villas is a stunning long crescent shaped beach that produces quality sand bottom beach break waves. Offers fun waves for all levels of surfers but is particularly suitable for the less advanced and is the perfect place to learn to surf. The beach is absolutely stunning and a great place to go just for an adventure. Less than 10 mins away by motorbike.

Goksik (Mini HT's)

Originally named Goksik and renamed Mini HT's by visitors this is a small but punchy little a-frame reef break that is a good option if Lance's Right is too big. Fun waves to be had but not one of our quality waves. Good fun for the kids and less advanced surfers. Less than 5 mins away by motorbike.

Monkeys

Monkeys is a fun shifty left hand reef break that works when the swell is very small. Located in a picturesque bay on the other side of the island the wave offers the occasional barrel and is offshore on a northerly. 20 mins away by motorbike. Photos to come.

Cobras

Cobras is located just up the reef from Lance's Left. An a-frame wedgy peak that offers excellent barrels over shallow coral. More of a left but you can go right. For the lucky surfer if conditions are right, you may be able to jag a wave from Cobra's all the way through to Lance's Left. 20 mins away by motorbike.

Mini Monkeys (Bintangs Left)

Originally named Mini Monkeys and renamed Bintang's Left by visitors the wave is a shifty left hand reef break located in one of the most beautiful tropical bays you've ever seen. Great place to go to escape the crowds on a small to medium swell, NE wind and high tide. Less than 15 mins away by motorbike.

Shipwrecks

Shipwrecks is a barreling right hand reef break located further up the point from 'The Point' wave. Fast and shallow it is suitable for the experienced surfer only. South Swell and NW winds are its preferred conditions. Rarely surfed. Located. 5 mins walk away.
